the perfect arcade

next in my stealing borrowing segment is cookie's perfect arcade. I grew up in the hey-day of pong and then the atari 2600 (remember when cable was just one channel?). I've grown to enjoy some of the more recent games, too. so here is.....

MY PERFECT ARCADE

1. at the top of the list, my favorite game ever, centipede. definitely should be a stand-up machine. (it is the best:
I rest my case)

2. next, ms. pac-man - the table top kind where two people can sit and play.

3. the game where you ride an actual skateboard, I can't remember the name.

4. the basketball shooting game (the kind with the actual basketball)

5. also, darts and...

6.
skee ball!!! (it's from Philly, suckerz)

7. of course, a pinball machine, maybe the
lethal weapon 3 pinball machine! (hint, hint... my half-birthday is right around the corner........!)

8. and finally, right smack-dab in the middle of the room: dance-dance-revolution!!!

all these machines should be at maximum volume all the time and there should be a snack bar in the corner that sells pizza by the slice and soda (I'll be sure to have cherry coke for ya, cookie!) it should be attached to a roller rink and that should be next door to a brewery which serves tapas and has a great wine list. that should do it.

and now, for something completely different.....

I've been doing some spring cleaning on the ol' bloggy, take a look around, and look for a few more updates on the sidebar in the coming weeks. meanwhile, I've been inspired to rip off by some other bloggers so the next few posts will be ripped off inspired.

I may be the last one to the party on this one, but
apparently, there is a fun and easy way to find out what your porn-star name would be. as I just saw the fascinating documentary on the most profitable movie of all time, Deep Throat this past weekend, I thought that this would be a very appropriate moment in time to discover my porn-star name....

here's how it works (I know you already know how to do this, anon!): you take your first pet's name for the first name and the street you grew up on for the last name. now, this is where it gets complicated. my doggy's name was actually alexandra, but we mostly called her sasha or alex. added to that, we moved a few times. so I actually have several options:

sasha green

sasha allen
alex walnut (nah, this sounds like a guy)
alexandra corinthian

..... and, probably the winner:

alexandra baring

ps - if you enjoyed this post, you are going to hell.

shut-up time

bleh! I've got the talkingest co-workers in the world!!!!! I just went to get a glass of water and the housekeeper took at least four minutes to tell me (ps-I didn't ask!) about the brand of water he's settled on at his house, why, and how much the cost has gone up, per case blahblahblah blah blah....

and sometimes in the lunchroom, there's this dude who works here who's a super-yakkety-yak-yak talker. I simply looked in his direction on Friday and he started telling me that he went out for breakfast this morning and so he really shouldn't go out all the time, he should stay in sometimes and eat the food had had brought in, after all, blahblah blah blahblahblah blah blahblah..... I understand that he's a personal trainer and thinks he needs to be friendly to everybody in case they personally want to be trained, but can he understand that I've worked here for two years and never so much as looked in the door of the gym and that when I have a book stuck in front of my face, "yes, I'm reading" and he does not need to ask me "reading?"

so to my ever-so-subtle coworkers, the old "book-in-front-of-the-face" trick doesn't work. I've heard that the best defense is a good offense, so now I'm trying offensive frowning, but I'm worried I may develop wrinkles.

what do you recommend?

ps - anyway, it reminds me of when I was a kid, and I used to say to my friend "it's shut-up time, Sharon." somehow I don't think that would go over in the corporate environment.

the perfect Saturday

wow, I did it - I had the perfect Saturday this past weekend! I could hardly believe it, even as it was happening to me. now I can share the ingredients for the perfect Saturday with you:

1. arrange for beautiful, sunny 70° weather.

2. spend a relaxing morning cleaning your apartment and getting ready to witness your good friend's wedding until in the end, sewing new buttons onto your sweater takes you longer than you thought and then the bride calls you and tells you the freeway is shut down in that direction so now you're in a hurry but luckily the traffic works out and all the lights are in your favor, as evidenced by the fact that you only managed to paint three nails on your way there. you are the last one to show up, but hey, you're still one minute early, right?

3. attend a ceremony where the chapel is precious, the staff friendly and warm, and the preacher takes the time to give the ceremony a special touch. try not to cry... then hug everybody and take a bunch of pictures!

4. have a wonderfully relaxing and fun post-ceremony luncheon with the coolest and friendliest group of people you can find. make sure that at least two of them co-tell the Funniest Story Ever® until you can't even tell if it's the wine or the belly-laughs making you feel this way. have a cup of coffee after lunch - hey, you're about to drive a 5- and 8-year-old to the zoo! (..... oh well, their parents never read this blog anyways....)

5. drive home, change into jeans (& convince the 5-year-old to change out of his bunny costume) and take your two cute kid-neighbors to the zoo. make sure they are perfectly well-behaved, this makes it especially fun. be sure to see the polar bears and kangaroos. carrying the 5-year-old on your shoulders all the way back to the car is optional.

6. gee, weren't you nice to invite those kids to the zoo (even though you used the parents' zoo pass, so the whole time, you were only out the price of one lollipop!!) now you should be invited to eat dinner with the family in the shady backyard. you've eaten so well today, you think a heavy dinner might be too much... but luckily they're having a simple dinner of hamburgers and hot dogs!! have one of each!

7. now watch TV or a movie or something, I can't remember - but I'm sure you'll figure it out!

have fun!

Wagahai wa neko de aru

it was funny to see this new article on wikipedia, because I recently had a related conversation. I got a little tap-tap-tap on my door last night and my littlest neighbor said "do you want reeces pieces or fudge brownie or both?" I figured out that I was being invited for ice cream and rushed downstairs.

after I got my cone, we started talking about the upcoming zoo trip (there's a new
Australian Outback Adventure where you're in with the kangaroos!) meanwhile my kitty Maria was going for the comic effect and making a circuit - through their open living room window, through the the living room, dining room, kitchen, then out the open back door and around again. luckily they (like me) find this very cute. the older little neighbor said "she thinks she's the QUEEN OF CATS!" damn! what a perfect nickname - why didn't I think of that?

anyway, if you visit the article and read the full explanation of the Japanese title, you can see that the novel was probably written about Maria, "the queen of cats," direct ancestor.

pudge on first?!?!

*&%#***#$***!!!!!!!

the power just went out and I lost my whole post!

screw it! the main point was that ivan rodriguez was playing first base last night for the Tigers and I linked to some articles and blog posts of interest about it, gave my opinion as to whether he'd do well in that position (I'm about 65% confident he can pull it off), pissed and moaned that I missed the end of the game because I knew it would be interesting!, and wrapped up by stating that I'm still a big fan anyways. I also linked to this guy for a reason that doesn't matter now that I'm not explaining the whole thing again, but, hey, go visit him anyway. he's been posting some gold lately....

ain't that some ****?

I recently got a flier for a town meeting about AT&T to be held at the public library. it was being run by L. Brooks Patterson, our county commisioner who looks just like, and is, a very scary Republican politician. I thought to myself "I don't care about AT&T. I've got a cell-phone," and threw out the notice.

well, well! when I went to the library Monday night, I found out the meeting had actually been about a topic very near and dear to my heart - wireless internet! as you may remember from this post, the city promised to have wireless service for all by the end of March. but in a shocking turn of events, anon was right! and I may now have to pay him a quarter (hey, that's 1/6 of a half-pint at happy hour, you lucky dog!)

apparently, the wireless signals would have to piggyback off the telephone lines, or something, and AT&T says if they don't make any money off it, they ain't participating. WANKERS!!!!! it's hard to believe that this is only the second time I've blogged about politics, considering the politically-active family I grew up in, but.... I guess it just proves that you have to find the issues that really matter to a person, and mine appears to be... BLOGGIN'!

bloggers unite!!!!! we must fight the man on this one!!!!!! go bloggers!!!!!!!

Nepalese food

Marie and I ate at a Nepalese restaurant in Royal Oak last night - I had no idea what kind of food it is, so I was very excited. luckily, just before I left, my neighbor let me in on the fact that it's floor seating and pricy, so at least I knew to put on comfy pants and brought some extra $$.

unfortunately, I didn't have my camera, so I'll just have to tell you it is pretty chill. there are carpets all over the floor, and cushions scattered against the walls and on the floor around low tables. there are fake flowers everywhere, even formed into wreaths on the wall, which are interspersed with pictures of Hindu gods. top it all off with slow, random blinking colored Christmas lights on the ceiling. melloooooooooooooooow, man.

the food was awesome (and according to the menu, holistic). it was like Indian, with curries and clay-oven cooked chicken and lamb, but with a twist. and they had my favorite food in the world, dumplings, so that's what I had- veggie dumplings. I had been afraid the entire menu would read:

********************

MENU
Yak
Yak butter

********************

so I was relieved to see the actual menu. they did have an item called yak & yeti salad, but them most scary thing in there was garbanzo beans.....

miércoles, mayo 03, 2006

yesterday my kid neighbor turned eight! he invited me over for cake and ice cream, which was apparently delicious as I seem to have offered to take four kids to the zoo- yikes! on the plus side, the parents have a zoo membership, so at least it won't cost me $44 just to get through the gate.

buy I am psyched to visit the butterfly house, see the big cats, and maybe catch a glimpse of the baby polar bear. maybe I'll even get a big rainbow lollipop!*

almost time to sign off at work....

what a long day full of crazyness at work - as the cookie monster would say "thank fuck that's over!"

I hope you're resting up today after your extra-long weekend, cookie!

rockin' De-troit sunday!

yesterday was a beautiful spring day, and BRAINON and I went out and enjoyed it to the maximum! first off, we went to the ballgame (tix courtesy of my boss - thank you! boss). we watched the Tigers shutout the Twins to make it a 3-game series of wins.

then we stopped by the Motor City Brewing Works, which has a wonderful relaxed, breezy atmosphere, especially on a breezy late weekend afternoon. finally, we headed over to Mexicantown and had dinner at el Comal Restaurant. they're a fav of mine because they have a great kitchen: they serve mexican, guatemalan, columbian, salvadoran and vegetarian food..... I had enchiladas suizas. it was definitely the best enchiladas suizas I've ever had.....

what did you guys think, BRAINON?

ides of blog: April - edible tour of Philly

in honor of "fabulous Philadelphia," I hereby present you with a sampling of some of the finest in cuisine that Philly has to offer. well, actually, this is just stuff I like. Philly actually has great restaurants, some of which you can learn about here.
(WARNING: this is a non-vegetarian tour. will you vegetarians please exit the bus now.)

1. first in my edible tour of philly is, of course,
cheesesteaks at the italian market or any corner store. but I definitely recommend visiting the italian market cause it's fun, you're guaranteed to see some new foods, and if it's cold enough, you can jog down the street pretending to be Rocky. I like the cheesesteaks at Lorenzo's (9th & Christian), or of course, you can go to the famous Pat's Steaks. (I went to Pat's on my first date, then on to a Yes concert at the Spectrum. man, was I a cool lil' 12-year-old! shout out to Arthur Russell!)

2. if your trip is on a hot day, make sure to stop for some water ice at any place that looks good. I think they used to have a
Rita's up on ridge ave. in roxborough that was awesome.

3. definitely have the sausage and peppers at
reading terminal market. it's at a little cart near the back. this is a good place to get any fresh veggies you didn't pick up at the italian market, plus amish stuff.

4. next why not go to lancaster county to visit the amish themselves? (sorry, I couln't find an amish blog to link to -haha) while you're there enjoy the most best ever 'dairy' ice cream at a place like
this.

5. finally, remember what you learned in Rocky: "retards like the zoo." do yourself a favor and head over there. you can get one of those huge round lollipops with the rainbow stripes. those were the best! these guys do have a
blog..... (with one post. hey, it's a start.)

enjoyz!

I thought it was funny...

ode to Rocky

I've been totally Philly oriented since I came back from my trip to PA* (I'm putting together a late, Philly-related ides of blog post). The last few nights, I've been watching a few minutes of my Rocky DVD before I go to sleep - and I just want to say:

ROCKY is the greatest movie!!!

you know how you've always remembered Rocky as being a good movie, better than you'd think... well, be sure to watch it again, because it stands the test of repeated watchings. I notice something new every time I watch it; this time, I found a number of interlacing themes from scene to scene, that I never noticed before. ROCKY KICKS ASS!

summer foods

travelling with my brothers, I had to laugh when we stopped for snacks because they got the same exact things I used to eat when I was a kid. anyway, it got me to thinking about the foods you eat in the summer only......

1. pink lemonade bubbalicious
2. sunflower seeds
3. frozen snickers
4. pickle from the barrel
5. iced tea

I'll add to this list as I think of them....

building family memories... ;)

well, we had a good trip out to PA. my little brothers (who are both taller than me now!!!!) came too, so it was a fun trip..... my grandparents were thrilled by the visit, and they seem to be doing pretty alright.

the funniest thing that happened was... when we got to the hotel the first night my littlest brother, Omari, who is 13, came into the lobby saying "I really have to go to the bathroom" and walked over and politely asked the clerk where the bathroom is. my older little brother, Malcolm (15), then ran past him in the direction indicated to 'bathroom block' him. he got in there ahead of Omari and stayed.... and stayed... and stayed.... until my mom was completely done registering, so it must have been at least 10 minutes. we grab our luggage and mom goes "where's Malcolm?" and I explained how he was busy being rude to his brother. so we all looked at each other, shrugged, grinned and got onto the elevator giggling.

you should have heard us laughing when he knocked on the door about 15 minutes later!!!!!!!!! it was hi-larious!!!!!!!!

************************
but we didn't get to meet up with my sister & nephews... nor my dad and step-mother, who were in town nor my brother or his girlfriend of about 1 year who I haven't even met yet ........ booooo!!!!!!!!!

question for you math geeks

so I've been playing sudoku lately and it occured to me: how many possible sudoku grids are there? the grid is 9x9 places, and the numbers 1-9 must occur once only in each row, column and box of nine (of which there are nine).

because if there are like, 10 or 20 or even 40 potential grids, wouldn't it possibly be easier to memorize all the potential combinations and just recognize the pattern, rather than spend all that time going through the logical process to discover each value for hours on end. mightn't that
strategy actually save time? and make you equally good at all levels of the game, which, when you solve it the traditional way, you probably aren't.

am I right?

ps- if you're some MENSA person, don't even answer me. as a matter of fact, get off my blog until
you've solved some crimes or something. you tell em, shamy!

on the road again....

I've got a roadtrip coming up! but this time not to Toronto. instead I'm headed to pennsylvania to visit my grandfather, better known as "Pop-Pop," and my grandmother, better known as "Marie." Pop's been kinda sick lately, so "ROAD TRIP!" me and my mom will drive out there tomorrow till Sunday and try to get some stuff straightened out.

I'll plan to stop and see my sister in Villanova, too, so get ready for some super-cute pix of my nevvies if I can get my technical *#&$*& together....

1st game of the season!!!!!!

I'm so lucky!!!!! Friday I went to the baseball game with BRAINON (sorry, I'm tired of typing out BRITEW and anon)! it was so much fun! thanks, guys!

the tig's chewed up cleveland 5-1, and there were quite a few stellar plays to enjoy. BRITEW tried to keep a scorecard but petered out in the 5th inning. friday night fireworks won't start for about another month...

only other news, I wished I brought a camera so I could get a pic of armpit-guy to show you... maybe next time......

then we ate at the traffic jam - yeah! I had a crabcake. I have to stop getting those, they are so expensive..... but it's like crack for me

CGG: "Oh, really?"
CGG: "Is is kind of skunky or what?"
CGG: "Alright, we'll see. Alright, I'll see you in a minute."
CGG: "Bye."

I went to the video store last night and I had my hand on Crocodile Dundee in LA....... but then I ...hesitated........

what if I didn't find it funny...? would I be terribly disappointed...? I decided that I better wait and watch it with somebody else. that way, we could make MST3K-type comments about it and it would be funny no matter what.

more about movies

I think I'm gonna rent some movies tonight. I found a small independent place near my home that is a) cheaper and closer than blockbuster and b) although small, always has copies of new releases in stock and c) is not blockbuster. cause I hate blockbuster.

but after awhile, I noticed there's a reason why the movies are always in stock. because nobody's ever in there. BECAUSE IT'S A FRONT FOR A PORN SHOP. the only other customers I ever see are guys who furtively trot into the back room.

oops.

yikes!! what a busy last two days at work - I'm so beat, I've decided to put my difficult work to the side for the rest of the day and just blog look up strolling accordian players. seriously, that's one of my real, true, official tasks at my job this week. when I'm tired of that, maybe I'll look through our order book for highlighting pens.

I talked to my gram on Sat - it was her b-day - and we got to talking about movies and she said the last movie she saw in the theater was ..........

Crocodile Dundee!!! that was like twenty years ago! I was cracking up :)

she said she went to movies most when she went to school at U-M (for engineering!) among other things, she remembers they always played gone with the wind during finals week.

eddie's movin' on down the road

I just called the Detroit Humane Society - it turns out they are the closest place to me that will take a cat. can you believe, they are open from 8 am to 9 pm 7 days a week?

so that means I could even take him down there tonight....... yikes! so sudden! I like the little guy, and I'm worried, what if he doesn't get adopted and they gas him... :( he's super-nice and friendly, maybe that'll get him in the door somewhere. I could see kids just loving him, my little brothers sure did....

but, anyway he's definitely not staying with me, so I'll have to "be strong." I might go tonight, just to get it over with ASAP. like taking off a band-aid.

more animals news

I had the most fun last night!! I was looking up answers for my Sunday NYT crossword puzzle in the worldbook on my laptop (hint: 'port in Poland' is Gdansk) and then I came across some sound files of different birds singing. so I started playing them, trying to psych out my cat Maria. she was curled up across the room from me when I started and of course, she tried to play it cool, only flipping her ear now and then (yes, she only has one ear - long story). so then I tried a file of a cat meowing and she ignored that, too.

but then, I played a cow mooing, and she sat right up and was all like "huh??????" and "what????" and then she got up (YES! a CAT GOT UP!) and came over and kept listening as I played the file over and over. I can't believe she was so excited by a cow! she sat down on my lap and started purring and purring, so I played some more bird files, then went back to the cat. well, this time she jumped up and purred and rubbed against the computer after every meow! she also especially loved the bird files where you could hear a bunch more birds in the background, calling at the same time as the one in the foreground. she seemed to be kind of intimidated by the eagle though (and the bear).

but mostly she was totally rolling around in my lap and purring and purring. like, she wanted to let me know how much she appreciated the entertainment. I have to admit, I really liked listening to them, too. it was like, the natural sounds were so soothing. and I guess I don't get to hear them that much.

so I think I'm going to make up a mix tape with a bunch of different animal sounds and just play it all the time. I know most of them would never be in the same ecosystem or whatever. this tape will be more like those pictures in the Jehovah's Witness literature where all the carnivores are layin' with the herbivores and omnivores....

eddie was down chillin in the basement, so he missed it!!! but it reminded me of when it was just me and Maria - I think we're both going to enjoy it being just us again. it was a real cozy evening. yes folks, that's my exciting life in tha D!

these modern birds of today

you will not believe what I just saw when I was walking into my office building this morning!

on the roof of the building, at the corner right above the main door, were perched two..... canada geese!!! these fat, awkward BIG birds were standing up there like they were a couple of eagles or something! surveying the parking lot......

oh, these 'modern' birds of today... they don't believe in sticking to their place anymore! what's the world coming to??

first full day of spring!

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

wicked drummer baby

dammit! my computer at work doesn't have speakers, so I can't listen to this little guy (via trent)

am I the only person in Detroit who hasn't heard of this angelito? this kid sound like an awesome tyke. actually, my little nephew seems to have a huge music capacity too, but he's like 5. he's just starting music lessons now - 15 minutes a week hahahahaha! isn't that cute? when he went to his first lesson, about halfway through, he looked up at my sister and goes "I love this place!" he got so excited, he said stuff in Spanish, although he usually speaks English only. so my sister had to translate for the teacher, who has a heavy Eastern European accent, and then she had to translate what he said back to my nevvie.

anyway, I saw my nephew get down on a electric organ last summer, so I know he's got soul....

maybe one day these two kids will jam together!!!!

you can't even believe my skillz

I was reading some magazines over the weekend -

aside-this is one of my least economical habits. it doesn't really cost that much, but if I buy 2 or 3 mags in one month, I could have bought 1 subscription.... but I don't want to have to read the same mag every month...

....so anyway I have developed a very specialized skill thanks to my current job: it is an ability to quickly and cleanly remove the subscription solicitations from throught a magazine. my boss hates them, apparently, so when sorting the mail falls to me, I get the opportunity to develop this little-known art. and may I say greatly-unappreciated art, as well. if you ever had the chance to enjoy a magazine free from little pieces of paper falling all over the place, I think you would quickly realize that this is central to the enjoyment of any magazine. not only that, but I can remove said scraps of paper with no creased pages or fingerprints. in record time.

my fav mags: GQ, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, British Vogue, Paris Vogue, Men's Health, Scientific American, and yes... sometimes a gossip rag or a Cosmo. they reminds me of a simpler time when I was a pre-teen and frankly, life was much slower paced.

************************
hint for those of you who like to be economical: men's mags cost less than women's, per pound

lobsta dinner!!

I went to my ma's house last night and she stopped at the store to get fixins for a salmon, mashed potato and vegs dinner... and saw that little lobster tails were on sale. my littlest brother loves lobster, so she got 2 pounds of beautiful salmon and 4 lobster tails (for 4 people, but two are growing teenaged boys)..... and we feasted!!!!

I've only tried lobster once or twice, never in the shell, so I thought I didn't like it..... well, I do!!!!!!!!!

also last night: a) I think I saw my littlest brother grow before my eyes. b) I spent a considerable amount of time after dinner putting them both in headlocks so I could get hugs.

and there was exactly enough leftover salmon for me to pack a lunch! and it's 12:04 now..... see ya!

buh-bye, eddie :(

eddie's fate has been decided....

well, not ultimately (hint, BRITEW & bedhead), but he's definitely not staying with me. I just realized two or three days ago, that though he has settled and calmed a lot, it's clear now that he's never going to really fit in here. I think a big part of it is the second cat factor. I'm not sure there's really room for two cats here at all, but certainly not one who is such an attention hound as eddie....

mrs. downstairs neighbor came over last night to watch americas next top model and I guess I got to see him with fresh eyes (although I'd already decided he's going). he is so darn fidgety! and he has relaxed a lot since he got here. but he was so excited by company (as evidenced by his drooling on her- awwww!) and he could not sit down for more than a minute at a time. maybe that's cause she usually comes over with her two little sons, though....

anyway, soon it'll be back to just Maria, a roomie, and me. I'll let Maria go out doors again when it's a little warmer, so look forward to posts about her bullying other pets and annoying the neighbors this summer.

is it a coincidence that my brain feels like cotton the day after watching america's next top model?.....

attn: artist needed to fill art gap, pls start creating immediately

I was bummed to hear that gordon parks died today. I saw an exhibit of his photography a year or two ago at the Detroit Institute of Arts. the photos were just amazing, and I even noticed some re-curring organic forms in his work that have shown up in little sketches I've done, so I felt pretty special!

thas right, kiddies!

THE JARHEAD DVD IS OUT TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so take that, you boring Oscars!

bastone-y goodness

hi folks, it's time once again for me to rub your culinary noses in my wonderful eating-out experience - last night, BRITEW and Bedhead
and I went to happy hour at Bastone to celebrate Bedhead's birthday
(of a couple weeks ago). Bastone, if you recall, is the belgian restaurant/brew-pub that has such a yummy menu.

well, happy hour consists of $2 pints of delicious belgian brews and 1/2 price mussels, pizzas, and fries (with the mayo-based sauces: blue cheese, garlic, etc). what a bargain! the pizzas come with fromage blanc and mushrooms or nicoise olives and are a delight! we are finding that the whole consistency and service issue is working itself out. the first couple years were a little bumpy sometimes, but when it's good.... it's sooooo good! (and happy hour is from 3pm to 9pm!!!)

BRITEW and Bedhead also find that the beers are improving steadily. anyway, a good time was had by all and..... dare I dream? this may become a regular meet-up!!!!!!!!!!

darn it, now I'm hungry again.

Eddie says happy birthday, Bedhead! (Maria was licking her privates and glaring- I'm not sure what that meant.)

how do you like your hot dog?

well, this is a decidedly non-lent question, but I don't think I have a huge catholic readership anyway. and I really want to know.....

for myself, my classic is mustard n' onions. but I was contaminated by that furrin food when I lived in Chile, so sometimes I crave a nice, juicy hot dog with... mmmmmm.... chopped tomatoes and mashed avocado.... yum!

so let me know.... what is your fav?

UPDATE: seriously. only two of you eat hot dogs? I thought this would be more of a sort of infectous debate, along the lines of "your mother eats hot dogs with garlic pickles!"

happy almost-summer too!

hurray!!!! spring training is here! hells yeah!

hope for eddie?

well, I was talking over the eddie dilemma with Pat when I visited her in mississauga. remember, she is a vet tech so I thought she might have some sage advice but mainly she just sounded worried that I could have a cat for like four months and still be thinking about giving him away. she was like, "um, you're not bonding with him?"

bonding. nope, he was just getting on my nerves. (but remember, I've been sick-ish and thus irritable for 2 months) however in the last day or two, suddenly I'm beginning to see, like, little things about him that I like.....

here's one: when he's listening/trying to figure something out, he puts his head to the side like a dog. that's so cute!

however he still acts like I am abusing him terribly when I make him sit next to me instead of on top of me. he cringes and ducks under my hand, slowly but steadily trying sneak back on top of me (I guess he heard about the tortoise). that's pathetic but also annoying especially after the 50,000th time.

Lord, give me strength (to love this kitty.)

crazy friday weird/high point

I just talked to our state governor! (she was very nice. duh. she knows I can vote.)

give it up to tha lorider! I have friends and influence people !!... or at least.... I talked to the gov!

*snicker*

okay, only three (possibly 4, no 5) of you will find this amusing, but enjoyz!!! specially you girl! enjoy your secret life!!

hahahahahahaha!

fo' rizzle

okay, okay, don't send out the fire brigade... here I am, (slightly) nauseous like a hurricane.

(erp) ready to blog....

and ps there won't be any ending to the cheese sandwich story! clearly, nothing could ever match a beginning of that magnitude.... PEOPLE! obviously, I was pre-stomach bug on mon to even have the idea of a story about a living cheese sandwich - could you peeple please please warn me next time I start rambling...... "lorider, don't blog right now, or operate heavy machinery, or go to a hospital where there are all kinds of germs waiting to infect you...."

thanks in advance....

planned communities:

no

yes!

phew!

hi peeples-

I been quiet while waiting to hear more about my mom - they admitted her to the hospital because her heart was playing an a-rhythmic-funk/jam/fest. but they aren't going to do an invasive test, after all, and she finally got a room, too... and she'll go home tomorrow... so she's happy and I'm happy. my hospital visit gets to be the relaxed, its-all-over-now sort....

heroine: "I'll take my brothers to get dinner, okay Ma?"
heroine: "do you have any cash, btw?"
heroine: "glad you're feeling better, Ma."

(ps-can you believe they gave her a salt-shaker!!!!!!! to keep with her!!!!! she is so persuasive. but she does work at that hospital.....)

the magical cheese sandwich

okay boys and girls, it's story time again. once again, this story will come in two segments, and you get to guess the ending if you like:

once upon a time, a cheese sandwich lived on the planet Mancreion. he had heard many rumors about the planet "Earth," but the idea that beings of higher intelligence would eat a fellow cheese sandwich seemed ludicrous. surely this was just an old rind's tale.

one day, he had the chance to go to Earth though, so he went. he got up early on a fryday, walked to the station, and paid the 17 cucumber fee. after a short wait in line, the sandwich climbed aboard the ship and prepared for suspended animation.....

snowboard cross

who else saw the snowboard cross on the olympics yesterday? wasn't that crazy? seriously, who thought of that crazy shit?

I wish they would have spent some more time explaining the sport and introducing the athletes - they did that, but it was very quick. it was like they knew they had to show it, cause snowboarding is "in," but couldn't be bothered to give that bit more time to properly introduce us to it.

maybe I should invent a new sport! like cheese-sandwich-making or something! while on a snowboard! rad!

must bring own cheese

duh, my sandwich fetish is so important I must post at length about every detail........

PS!!! I have to find a new roommate!!

I talked to Liliana last night and she has figured out that.... hello! she never comes over to the apartment she's paying rent on.... I mean NEVER! she will keep paying rent till I find another roommate.

I think I will spread the news by word of mouth this time.... I wanna yoga roomy, like my BRITEW!

more sandwich news

I think I must be cheese-deficient. I've eaten a cheese sandwich 5 days in a row now, and all day, all I can think about is the last cheese sandwich I had......

day one: sick and feeling pitiful on Pat's couch in Mississauga. she made me a cold cheese sandwich for the road. by the time I got home, I was all better. coincidence?

recipe-brick cheddar on nut and grain bread with miracle whip. Pat had no sammich veggies, so on a whim I asked her to grate some carrots on. OMG! you must try a cheese sandwich with grated carrots - so yummy! I know, a cold sandwich... in winter ?!? but it was strangely compelling....

day two: driving home from work, salivating over the day one sandwich, I stopped by the store and got flax-seed bread and medium brick cheddar........

recipe- brick cheddar with a slice of baloney on flax-seed bread with safflower mayo and grated carrot. mmmm......

day three: couldn't wait to eat the same sandwich again, so I did.

day four: finally! I'd had enough of the same sandwich for three days... sort of.

recipe-litely toast flaxseed bread, then put back in the toaster oven on the tray with lots of block cheddar over a slice of fennel root. verdict: this is amazing! the fennel gets ever-so-slightly slightly steamed and basted with cheese juice in there. YUM!

day five: I want what I had last night, although I may substitute cucumber for the fennel.

MUST. HAVE. CHEESE.

oh god, okay! I mean, I know this is not technically a post, but can I just tell you how much f-ing plasticware I am using?!?

I used to be, like, environmentally aware..... and NOW, I'm starting to ENJOY and PREFER using: plastic spoons and sometimes forks, too, paper cups for coffee and tea, individual servings of pudding and 'fruit cup,' which is probably plastic too!

missisauga redeemed!

well, I had the tired-est, pathetic-ist trip to Toronto this past weekend....

fri night class was great (& I achieved my travel goal which is to arrive in time to have a trip to the bathroom!!!!) but the next morning, I slept in rather than going to yoga, didn't get to the book store because there was a traffic jam, and didn't go to fressen.... and I was invited!!! it was a party!!!

in the end, it turned out pretty good though, because I got to visit my buddy Pat in
...... *dramatical shift in musical soundtrack* ...... missisauga!!!!! you may remember from a previous post that me + missisauga + cat = terror. luckily, Pat is not only a nice person but also a vet assistant, so she has three happy (& very fluffy) cats. we got along well.

I spent most of the remainder of the weekend on Pat's couch, watching...ewwww.... canadian tv. I bet they use this to torture american prisoners in the gulags. par example 1: bridget jones' diary. par example 2: the canadian women's team killing the russians 10-0 at the olympics and continuing to show the game. par example 3: this bizarre story on the news. canadians are weird, eh?

after about 24 hours of couch-sitting (+ 20 min walk around the park) I felt fresh and new again, kind of like the feminine product that was shown in a canadian commercial I saw.....

set-up: many "unfresh" things were shown.... like muddy footprints on a floor (I swear to god I'm not making this up). the reveal: these handy feminine wipes, packaged to go, eh!

detroit: city of the future

wow, according to this article, detroit is actually a ray bradbury-esque city of the future. or at least, a .5 mile loop of the downtown is futuristic....... (via boingboing)

***********************
funny, I've never felt very futuristic while living here......

on the other hand, my little brothers adored riding on the 'pe-bo muber' when they were toddlers.... kids really are our future.......

more about high school

apropos my recent dream post, a tidbit from my high school days:

a yearbook signature from my 10th grade math teacher referred to me as "the human lunch box."

so! what were YOU called in high school?

snow grumble grumble

1 inch of snow.

1 hour and 25 minutes to do a 20 min commute.

wtf?????? we're not southerners or something......?

nerds rule baby!

congrats to Bill Nye the Science Guy on his wedding!!!!!!!!!!!

eddie dilemma

sorry to say it, but the bloom is off the rose with eddie the cat. we've definitely passed through the honeymoon period and now we're well into the 'I don't know if really I like you in that way' period.... or at least I am. (he is still strenously enamoured of me. like all males ha ha aha aha)

actually, that's the problem - the dang cat is so dratted needy!!!!! he wants to spend 4 out of every 5 seconds plastered against my torso, and I am not into that. I took him in as a companion for maria, but he wants to be my sidekick!

I've been sick-ish and thus irritable all January, so I'm not ready to make any decision..... but I'm starting to wonder if eddie is just not suited for our house, and maybe would be a lot happier with somebody else. or maybe I haven't trained him enough yet?

I guess I'll keep waiting to make a final decision, but he is getting on my nerves!

************************
& I've been stuck at home being sick-ish so much this month that I have to give an extra shout-out to everyone who celebrated my b-day with me - I couldn't have gotten through January without ya!

nightmare on lorider st.

yikes! my one recurring dream has shown up again:

I have to go back and finish high school.

yes, umm..... that's right, tha lorider is a high school drop out. you got a problem with it? for the record, I am not advocating dropping out of high school, but I must say it worked out fine for me (I just did not pass go and went straight to college)........ except for the nightmares:

rather than being here, I'm in a building that I don't recognize, but it's huge and I know it's "my high school." I know I have to finish two years of curriculum, and it will be as difficult for me now as it would have been for me then, except I've had years in which to forget how to be a student. TALK ABOUT FREAKING ME OUT!

seriously, I've been out of high school for 16 years now - I don't want to spend the rest of my life thinking or dreaming about high school.

so how can I get rid of this dream?

holla!

I read in the local paper (luckily seeing the headline as I threw it out) that my town will be fully wirelessed by next month!!! we are one of six towns who get to try it out before our whole county is covered in 2007.

I'm so psyched!!! FREE ACCESS! and it's supposed to be fairly (?) fast (enough).

this reminds me of something I heard about how local government affects your quality of life much more than the feds (unless you're a druglord), so you should vote in your local elections, people! apparently the same is true for newspapers, but now I'll just use my new access to read the bbc and defamer from home. yay!

ps - but this one is made by BANANA DESIGN LAB.....
I dunno, I just find that name funny!

I know I'm not much of a sports fan anymore but....

hurray for celebrating!

happy groundshog day!

I forgot it's groundshog day today until I came into work: the lady at the desk across from me has put up a little display of photos of punxy with an embroidered sweatshirt - I'd forgotten she was born in punxy!

story about my grandfather

I don't know why this story popped into my head right now, but anyway, it illustrates that there are executives and then there are executives....

my grandfather used to be a big management exec. he had a driver and one time they were in manhattan, up from philly for a couple of days. in the morning at breakfast, my grandfather asked his driver how his room was. so it came out that the company was putting the driver up in a real dive on 42nd st (before the disneyfication, of course). so my grandfather asks for a telephone and calls down to philly and starts pitching a fit about how he can't find his driver, and the hotel staff doesn't know anything. when they admit they'll have to track him down across town, my grandfather insists that from then on, his driver stays at the same place he does. and so it was.....

pretty cool.

yelling at old people

I'm looking forward to my trip to Toronto at the end of the week for the usual reasons (yoga! -ahhhhh and fressen! -mmmmmm) but there is one part of the trip that I'm not really looking forward to - the upcoming visit to the rest-stop. for most people, this might be bad cause the bathrooms are dirty or something, but I have nothing against the canadian bathrooms (except that they call them washrooms) and I always enjoyed getting out of the car and grabbing some coffee and a donut or some fries, until... well... I started yelling at old people.

I mean, just one old person. so that's not so bad, right? actually, I didn't even yell at her, but she was old. and I did scold her, and I felt terribly about it afterward.

the reason was, she was totally bitching about the service at the Wendy's whose line we were in, and the service was fine. she was just a crabby, mean person, between bossing her friend (who was at least as ancient as her) to go check the lines at the other restaurant and making comments about the people who worked at the Wendy's. and the worst part was, she had some like 10-year-old grandson with her, and he looked like a pretty good kid. so that's some education, gramma!

I always thought growing up in the city means you can ignore anything, but she was so f-ing acid, after about 5 minutes I couldn't even take it anymore and said "well if you think the line is too slow here, why don't you try at the other place," and pointed out how rude she was being. I wasn't surprised that she tried to turn it around and said "well you are rude to say that to me."

so I said real patient and calm like I was explaining to one of my little elementary students: "no, you are being rude."

well, she apologized after that and (even better) shut up. and when I left the line with my order, a few people still in line gave me the thumbs-up or the 'meaningful smile' (which means a thumbs-up). but I still felt awful.

after all, she was old. plus, let's be honest, I just can't take conflict. even if I win.

I'm really afraid what I might do if some codger in front of me takes to long to choose a donut.

*shiver* I am pure evil.
oh my god! Jenna Elfman was on the radio being interviewed this morning and... she's a scientologist!?! I swear something really turns off in my brain when I hear that. so now, I lost another actor/actress to watch because I just can't be bothered with them anymore.

creep me out! dad, I guess I vote for Tea Leoni to play tha lorider in the TV movie of my life after all...

************************
and then after the interview they said Beck is, too! maybe I knew that one already. anyway, ??!!??!!!!!

hurry, cookie!

you better get over here to detroit before all the delapidation is gone!

in other news..... I'd actually like to see this
idol off-shoot, hopefully someone will load clips in the inter-tron.

random image:

LOTF

aside: hmmmm, I had to reconsider whether to post this after witnessing the recent change of venue of a co-blogspotter (and yet he lands on his feet - I can't believe such a great address wasn't taken! kudos, tf) well, I've altered this subtly ... just in case...:

watch out! in another overly-hyped media production, you will soon be watching a three-hour saga about the WAR OF THE FORKS! here is the rough outline of my screenplay, which will be told as a voiceover from the journal of an aspiring war-correspondant:

WAR OF THE FORKS (Episode I)
tagline: "nobody panic and no one will get hurt!"

dateline- 10:30 last tuesday: I think it is the nature of a large office for forks to disappear little by little, but our housekeeper decided to take this personally for some reason. he's been hoarding forks in the storage room, letting us eat off of spoons and occasionally, strangely-shaped airline forks when they turn up. as the vips here don't eat lunch with us peons, he's been getting away with this strange behavior. until..... today....... a very, very vip at our office went to get a fork for her salad and lo and behold, she had to eat with a funny-shaped fork!!!!!! the evil, but misunderstood peon got blasted. she is a very, very vip who likes to have a well-shaped selection of forks at her disposal.

dateline - yesterday afternoon:well, poor mr. hk didn't mend his foolish ways, but just shifted a few forks from here to there. he got reamed out again, only this time by a very sweet admin person who honestly, I've only heard her raise her voice one other time. well, mr. hk must have been so hurt by this he lost his mind entirely........

dateline - today about 5 minutes ago: I just looked in the drawer and the entire silverware tray was covered in a mountain of forks, forks!..... forks of every shape and size. he must have had these all along, but I don't see how not letting us use them was solving the problem? plus, our very, very vip ("how do you think I got so rich?") don't like too little or too much forks! if she happens to open the drawer, my friends, there is going to be more drama!

segue to Episode II: I tremble, I shiver..... I fear I may soon witness first-ever firing over forks!!

happy weekend to me!

oh yeah, I just decided what I'm gonna do this weekend: NOTHING!

hell yeah! movies, and maybe clean the house a bit, and sleep. legally blonde, here I come! again!

it's still my birthday week so read this and love it!

thanks, anonymous coworker for reminding us all of the rap song like whoa, cause I was having trouble making rhymes for this. I've been working on it for a week. it's an:

ODE TO MY LIP GLOSS

It smells like honey (I am the baddest mf in the room!)
It's shiny and shimmery with a tinsy bit of pink (I am the baddest mf in the room!)
Gives me something to do at work because it must be reapplied regularly (I am the baddest mf in the room!)
But not too regularly (I am the baddest mf in the room!)

Actually leaves my lips in pretty good shape, moisture-wise (I am the baddest mf in the room!)
You can get it at the drugstore (I am the baddest mf in the room!)
It's by bonne bell (you know you love bonne bell!) (I am the baddest mf in the room!)

I really am a great writer!

question for you drug-lords who read my blog

"But at 0830 GMT on Friday, a man on a train called in to say he might have been hallucinating, but he had just seen a whale in the Thames." -BBC

I don't know that much about hallucinogens, but don't you know when you might be hallucinating?
(and then don't you not call a government office and offer the info?)

internet dating update!

okay, maybe the exclamation point is unwarranted. just wanted to point out that the hallowed match.com, on a cursory search, has the same exact bozos that were on my last service, as I suspected. so am I gonna shell out money to them... prob not.

cooking classes, here I come. *sigh*

in another internet dealy, some 'friends' were 'pressuring me' to 'use' myspace.com. I thought this was a ploy to make me meet 'hot' guys they had stumbled over on the information superhighway sidewalk, but actually, there was a b-day message for me on there! wahoo!!!!!!!!!!!

synchronicity

oh man, all I am good for is sleeping this week.
the end.

UPDATE: okay, the reason why this post is called sychronicity, but I was tired to type this all, is that it seems like everybody was tired/under the weather/blue/? over the last week. is there something to this? listeners, please call in. Friday 13th? full moon? what were your experiences?
